As mentioned, a botched medical procedure can cause infertility, but if something had gone wrong you would/should have been informed at the time. The overwhelming majority of women hve no problems concieving after a abortion, particularly considering the amount of time you've waited.
Ofcouse, you wont get pregnant the first time. Most dont. And you are more likely to have a miscarriage (about 3%), but otherwise there are no related negetive effects. The child should be fine and you should be able the have a normal, full term baby. You need to be aware though that you are more likely to miscarry in the first 3 months, so try to be ready just in case. 20% of all women have a miscarriage in the first 3 months, its not just you.

very sorry to hear that you were forced into making a decission such as that. im sure it was not an easy decission for all involved. sorry to tell you, that it is possible that when they did the abortion, the D&C could have caused scar tissue, that could possibly prevent a pregnancy from happening and or also prevent an egg from implanting. most clinics will not admit to a botched procedure, they are there to make money, and lawsuits cost them dearly. have your obgyn, do an internal ultrasound and look around to see the extent of the damage... it's also possible if the scar tissue is not too severe, they may be able to surgically remove some of the scarred tissue to make it easier to become pregnant. try not to be too hard on yourself, you can not change the past, all you can do is go forward from this point. should it turn out that you are unable to concieve, there are many children out there that are praying every night for loving parents. also an advantage to adopting a little older child, no diapers, no midnight feedings, and a kid ready to have fun with you and tell you daily how much they love you. relax also, because stress can make it hard to concieve, and many couples after adopting or even after they go through the process of getting licensed to adopt, become pregnant shortly after. Good luck to you both. (if you can find a copy of the movie "dear children" by ligouri publications, (800) 325-9521, or call collect in missouri...314-464-2500. you would find it most informative, and helpful in dealing with the difficult decission you made.

Ms. Harvey, sometimes the mind can cause the body to behave in ways that are unclear. Your grieving over a decision you made 8 years ago concerning the abortion could be affecting you in not conceiving. You`ve heard or read of women who were so worried about becoming pregnant that sometimes they could not. Maybe counseling before you do conceive could help you immensely in completely healing and becoming comfortable with the idea of being a mother again. Your grief must have been unbearable at times since you were not a willing party in the abortion. Sometimes forgetting about a painful experience is not enough. We have to also forgive ourselves in order for the pain to leave and for us to heal.

No, it should not effect your ability to have children later on in life. A D&C is a relatively safe procedure and if you didn't have any complications and went to your post abortion appointment and have seen a gynocologist since then, you are fine. They preform D&Cs on women who have miscarriages all the time and these women go on to have children just fine. Plenty of women have surgical abortions and go on to have children. It's extremely rare that abortion would harm your chances of conceiving later on.
Abortion does not increase your chances of having a miscarriage either!! Geez, where do people make up this stuff?

It shouldn't make a difference, but abortions do go wrong and it could be possible.
You didn't mention how old you were or how long youve been trying to have a baby, but if youve been trying for at least a year you should go see a fertility specialist and see if anythings wrong. If its been less then a year i'd just keep trying.

One of my best friends had an abortion, and she told me she had horrible cramping and blood clots, I don't know if she had a D&C, but she told me she had to have something done, I don't think it should affect you getting pregant again however I was taught in one of my medical classes that having an abortion CAN make it so you can't get pregnant again, but it is unlikly, talk to your doctor about it, i'm sure that there are tests they can do, or questions they can answer....
