I think that muriatic acid (a fancy historical name of the otherwise ubiquitous hydrochloric acid) will dehydrate (remove water from) the cellulose (the component of all wood) and form char (carbon) as a by product.

A high concentration of muriatic (otherwise known as hydrochloric) acid will break down just about any organic matter.
