New York is the financial capital of the US. It's the headquarters to the largest banks, as well as to the two largest stock exchanges (NASDAQ and New York Stock Exchange).

That being said, Chicago has a fine commodities market and has its own mercantile exchange. Either city would be fine, and Chicago is a lot less hustle-bustle busy than NYC (although commuting in from the outlying suburbs is still pretty bad).

In today's environment of electronic transfers, you could work in finance in any city - Columbus, Saint Louis, Los Angeles, Portland....it all depends on when you want to wake up.

Come on, it's NYC!! So many foreign financial institutions operate out of there too, there's no question in my mind.

Chicago has seen a reduction in banks, with Bank One acquired by JP Morgan & the important jobs shifted to NYC, First Chicago/BofA jobs moved out of the city, etc.

But I'd prefer Chicago for quality of life reasons. Still plenty of finance jobs there too.

No, I don't think it's the best country. Many Americans are a bit ignorant when it comes to other countries and their traditions. BQ: I think it was mostly a terrorist attack, but I'm not sure. BQ2: The most dangerous would probably be some Middle Eastern country, or North Korea.
