A smaller amount did. But the Roswell thing just basically blew it all wide open.
Abduction stories and sightings were widespread before it, but Roswell just shot it to fame.

actually.. most people did believe in aliens way before the Roswell incident.... it just so happens that... paintings.. and sculptures have been found..in pyramids... describing should creatures.... but of course it wasn't until Roswell that it really caught the public eye...

people since the greeks believed that there was life 'out there'... whether it be the Gods or aliens is debatable.. but socrates was known to believe that comets/shooting stars/meteors and other cosmic events involved a higher being/power... thats why ritualistic cults in britain created stonehenge and other monuments dedicated to contact with the other worldly beings

yes as some think the date back before prehistory. and some even think JESUS was an alien sent to earth to help mankind develop into a different type of person.

Some did, it was a growing phenomenon that had its roots in the middle ages. I really recommend Carl Sagan's "Demon Haunted World" if you're interested in this.
