It is a period movie. If you read the book, it is set in a certain time period. At that point in time in history people were very quick to jump to conclusions. And, of course, it is a book written by Steven King, and people in the story were not able to believe in magic.

You see, the black man had these special powers -- he had the ability to heal things. The black man found the girls already brutally murdered and he was trying to help them, but they were to far gone.
Hope this helps.

If you watch the movie you will see that when they found John Coffee he was holding the two girls in his arms crying and there was blood everywhere. So, they figure hey this big black guy has the girls he killed them. That's why.

Well... think about it this way. This was in a time when people were still racist towards African-American people. Also, John Coffey was a very large man and from his threatening size, people would naturally assume that he raped and murdered the girls. He also never really denied that he killed them and if you have read the book version, he was saying: "I was trying to take it all back." It sounds as if he had raped and murdered the girls, then regretted it.

Because they found him with the 2 girls covered in blood. And anyway, black people back in those days were automatically presumed guilty.

the white people in the southern states(mostly) were racist. the black people were percieved as agressive, animalistic people. so the moment they saw this massive black man with the bodies of the two young girls, and splattered in their blood, they automatically deduced that he had murdered them. and that is the second tradgedy of the story.....

ps i am a white dude

They found him with the girls and since he was screaming, and big, and black, and a bit "simple" and they were racist, they decided that he HAD to be the killer.

Sidebar: Excellent acting by Michael Clark Duncan AND Sam Rockwell as Wild Bill, btw in that movie!!!

In those times they did not believe that whites could kill, it was easier to put the blame on them because they did not mean much!!
Horrible times, that movie is one of my favorites. I like the big black dude, he seems so soft hearted, what's his name?

Because he was found holding both of them dead in his arms crying. During the time frame of the story, being black was as good as guilty in a white murder.

because he was found holding the dead bodies and he was a big black dude

2006-10-17 16:35:45 · answer #10 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

because in that movie they show him holding them and he says i wish i could take it back...and because of the times they just assumed it was him because he was black....and they would put a black person away before a white person if the black person was suspected. also there was no such thing as dna testing back then
