Archeologogical evidence shows that they wrote their finest documents on fawnskin, with quills fashioned from the feathers of macaws and parrots. The ink was made from ashes mixed with lime and various pigments - including blood, anil (snail excrement which makes violet ink), and crushed flower petals were used for coloured figures. Their writing was very similar to the Egyptian Hieroglyphics. They also did remarkable works of art by weaving tiny feathers into fabric.
