I need to get the scratched off my cds. Are there any methods that have worked for you and that you don't have to buy?

Toothpaste.

Seriously... it's a mild abrasive, and can be used to polish out scratches in the plastic side, with a gentle rubbing action.. Wash and dry the disc carefully, afterwards.
If the scratches are on the silvered side, and have penetrated the coating... you've had it.

First of all, if your CDs still play, don't worry about removing the scratches! Just be careful with them. You may want to consider making a backup CD in case those scratches really do get out of control

If you want to remove minor scratches or just generally maintain your CDs, household cleaners work the best. Use a cotton swab and use one of many household cleaners (whatever you have): either rubbing alcohol, window cleaner, an abrasive toothpaste, wood polisher or even a metal cleaner called Brasso may do the trick. With the cotton swab it is important to start at the inner part of the disc and work outward (NOT in a circular motion because this can further scratch the CD). Make sure all debris that could cause scratching is removed prior to the cleaning.

Failing all of this, you may just have to take it to a music or DVD specialist where they can do it for you (for under $5). And if even that doesn't work, you may just have to replace it - some scratches are just too deep.

Hope this helped.

The problem with removing scratches is that often they are too deep and penetrate the plastic layer and disrupt the data on the disc. If they are only light scratches you may be able to polish them out using a soft cloth, car buffing compound (very fine) and a lot of patience.....

I have found that only very light scratches come out... these may cause the disc to skip a little so I have found that some discs were recoverable enough for me to transfer the data onto another disc... but once the disc is scratched..... either you need a resurfacer (removes and replaces the plastic layer.. costs about $1500)... or new disc...

Hope this helps...

You cannot remove the scratches. Scratches are the removal of part of the plastic the cd is made from.
therefore the digital data is no longer there.

Clean the cd off with a little bit of alcohol and wipe the the alcohol off with T-shirt like material. Let it dry out in a dust free area, before you use/listen to it again.

Well my computer teacher says make a 'bath' of warm water and dawn dish soap and 'wash' them in that..

he said he had hurricane katrina victums come to him with photo CDs that needed to be repared and he did it! :)

The data in CDs is stored in the silvery stuff on the top NOT in the plastic on the bottom! :)

also- my friend has one of those skip Dr. things and he says it doesnt work.
