Weight Gain 20 Weeks Pregnant

Weight gain varies enormously during pregnancy - some women gain as little as 17 lbs or as much as 35 lbs.

The average woman gains about a half pound per week in the first half of pregnancy (first 20 weeks = about 10 pounds).

Most of the weight gain during pregnancy takes place during the latter 20 weeks, and between weeks 20 and 40 it is usual for women to put on about 1 lb a week.

I would need to know more about your history and body composition to comment on whether six pounds is too little in your case.
Six pounds by 20 weeks seems within the curve but by 24 weeks, another pound or two would be good. Of course, your diet is the most important variable here. Make sure you are getting enough protein, carbohydrates and all the essential vitamins and minerals.

At that point in my pregnancy, I was still loosing weight, due to terrible morning sickness. I stopped loosing around 22-23 weeks, but didn't gain anything until about 28-30 weeks. It took me all the way until 10 days overdue before I finally gained the 25 -30 recommended by my OB.

But my sister-in-law started gaining like mad around 15 weeks, and ended up gaining about 50-60 (maybe more) altogether. Everyone is different, so I wouldn't worry about it, as long as your Dr. is not concerned.

Good luck, and congratulations!

It varies I would not be concerned. I lost 10lbs in my 1st trimester and never gained a lb back. So my pg weight was -10. As long as you are eating healthy i would not worry about it. Fluffier women tend to gain less. If you dr is not concerned about your weight gain then i wouldnt worry about it. Remember also just because you are not gaining that much doesnt mean your baby isnt. I was told at 31 weeks that my baby was an lb over the normal weight. She only came out 7lb5oz.

I'm not sure the average but I am at this point of my pregnancy now and I have gained 8-9kg. But within saying that I was underweight before I fell pregnant. My pre pregnancy weight was 45kg now I am 53kg. Its normal to gain about 300gs per week and about 14kg to 18kg is a healthy range to put on by full term.

Congratulations and good luck.

I heard a Dr once say you should not have gained more lbs then you are weeks. I think that's good advice. Basically, when your 40wks you should not have gained more then 40lbs. I think if you have only gained 6lbs and your Dr says that's fine, then your ahead of the game. With both of my babies, I had gained about 15-20lbs by 20wks, which it's on the higher side. Congrats!
