We are all born with dignity. It is our birthright as sentient creatures with reason, the capacity for compassion and the ability to make choices.

The trick is realizing that and claiming it as one's own.

Dignity isn't something that can be acquired or conferred, but it is something that can be lost.

The good news is that it can also be regained.

Dignity is the ability to recognize one's value and self-worth and to refuse to be compromised.

Dignity is earned by actions and deeds.
AS is respect.

Once it is acquired it is precious and requires work to remain at this level that inspires others to become the same.

It can't be given, but it can be shown or "taught".
It can be lost or surrendered.
