My AP US History teacher told the class today that North Korea declared war on us yesterday. What exactly do you think will happen? A lot of people think that just because we're the United States of America, that bombs just can't be dropped on us. Do you think that they will? Could a world war be sprouting up? I know some people already think this is a world war. I don't know about that one. I'm just curious, because I don't understand this...Why did they declare war anyway?

First thing that should happen is that your teacher should check his/her sources of information.

N. Korea said that U.N. sanctions are a declaration of war. Leaving it ambiguous.

North Korea declared war because the United States put sanctions on North Korea, causing them to think we were declaring war. But, here's what all the fighting is REALLY about. It is for THIS secret "prize" and NOT about a "war on terror" or "fighting for freedoms"!...

Now the NKs have had a successful test, there'll be a possible surge in the terrorist market for their particular brand of explosives. Unlikely that they will make a direct hit themselves. Too much face to be lost if the damn things don't work properly. The NK leadership are not stupid, Kim Jong Il is a smart operator and not the raving fruitcake that most people would like to believe. (Despite a few personal vanities!) He won't make any move that is likely to bring him into direct confrontation with the rest of the world, but will definitely use the leverage he has gained as a result of this successful test. You can bet that all sorts of polite behind the scenes negotiating is taking place, despite the public chest beating and muscular posturing of the rest of the world.

Best of my recollection, we were already at war with NorKor... We're currently under a cease fire for the past 56 years or so. Why do you think we have the 2nd Infantry division stationed there, along with smaller aviation and artillery detachments. We only recently (mid 90s) removed the tactical nukes from the theatre and moved them to Japan and other SE Asian bases.

Let them declare war what can they do
Nothing.
They have no fuel for there tanks so they cant invade south korea , same goes for there air force .
They just have a parade while everyone starves and tell stories how they defeated the imperialist west .

Kim jong Ill reminds me of a sucide bomber who chickens out

What North Korea said was that sanctions were like a declaration of war. I haven't seen this posted anywhere, so I think your history teacher misconstrued the information.

We have a missle defense system that would likely tackle any nuclear missle threat from North Korea. Luckily, their detonation was 4 times weaker than they expected.... basically a dud in terms of a bomb... barely bigger than the "Trinity" detonation (the first ever).

As for war, if they launched a nuke at us, the US has enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world 200+ times. I imagine if we had to fight them, we would use the brute force of our navy and airforce to pound them with bombs and missles similar to the "shock and awe" campaign in Iraq.

As for Russia, I highly doubt they would strike us because the international community is watching them like hawks because of the recent death of investigative journalists and people trying to expose the corruption in Russia. Also, if they attacked us, they must realize that there would be "Mutually Assured Destruction".
