i usually try to prep myself before i have my period. I make sure I exercise regularly a few days prior to my period, and then I also take vitamins or eat foods rich in vitamin B or Iron. If I have bad cramps, I usually stretch for about 15-20 minutes before a warm bath, and I take 2-3 Aleve as soon as I notice the pain. I get a Thermacare Menstral Heat Patch and sleep off the cramps and normally after a few hours of sleep I can deal with the pain. I am currently on Seasonale, so my period is only 4 times a year, and the flow is easy to deal with. it also helps if you relax by using candles, aromatherapy, etc...just to keep you calm.

Ibuprofin. Hot baths or a heating pad helps too.
I switched to a Diva Cup a while back and feel a lot more comfortable about having my period. It doesn't help with cramps but it is so much less bother and less chance of leaks.

Massages, heat packs, Advil, crankiness, chocelate (sp) & hanging in there...

Birth control pills also help lower crankiness, and PMS symptoms.
