a popular actress has to be dedicated in her job ,and genuinely listen to others ( like people outside workplace).

.... she has to exercise more, like swimming or into volleyball,so she exudes natural beauty while advocating a healthy lifestyle ,that is also a popular idea in becoming popular.

she needs to have common touch ... a person without common touch can be very classy, intelligent, successful, beautiful etc but she would never ever be as popular as she intends in other ways..

she must have endurance and willing to learn ,maybe in the realms of performing arts.

goodluck!!

Beauty gets you as far as the next 7/11 down the street. What it really takes to become a popular actress in Singapore is Hardwork, enthusiasm and talent. And even if your talent is not as well developed as the person next to you in the audition room, it takes passion and risk to be innovative and flexible with whatever role you get or take on. Acting isnt all fame and Star awards and the 'glitz' and 'glamour'. An actress takes on a responsiblity to be able to transcend the message of the playwright, director or scriptwriter to the audience. So what i believe it takes to become popular is when the actress as a person, has a heart, a soul, feelings and intentions of bearing her being in the moment, so that the audience becomes drawn into the actress' performance, thus the audience is one with the actress' feelings and intentions. The audience will either symphatise with the character the actress is playing or oppose the character the actress plays but at the end of the day the actress is able to make that strong connection with the audience and the audience will therefore enjoy this actress' work and appreciate the effort the actress has put in to gain this beautiful connection. So yeah you could sleep with the director to get the parts you want....but is it possible to sleep with an entire audience to gain popularity? I dont think so. It takes more than beauty or even brains.....it takes hard work and soul and hey at the end of they day..trust me..its always worth it.

The difficulty in becoming a popular actress is getting higher and higher as there are many up and coming ones. Being popular in which way? Popular with the mass audience or just a certain group? How would you want the public to portray you?

One has to decide which path to take for maximum exposure, as time is a crucial factor (well, one will get old....). Some actresses might take the sexy yet not revealing route, appearing in premium males magazines which might secure the interest of advertisers and more opportunities in films or TV serials.

Now, acting come into play, if you have beauty and no acting, people will start to comment and all. Roles chosen also play a part, nasty or too revealing roles will be stereotyped by audience.

Well, do not forget to do some charity work and smile to the public. Do not have too many bad publicities, as an artiste, your private life is of great public interest.

At the end of it all, be yourself.....

ACTING MYTHS

"Reprinted from ACTOR'S TOOL KIT, THE SEVEN ACTING MYTHS
by Bob Fraser

Myth #1 - YOU HAVE TO START YOUNG
This commonly held belief is far from the truth. Although starting young will certainly give you more time to perfect your craft, many stars have started "late."
Phyllis Diller started her career at age 38 after raising a family and spending almost twenty years as a newspaper writer.
Richard Farnsworth was over fifty before he began his acting career. When he won an Academy Award nomination for his role in Comes a Horseman, it came as a surprise to many in the industry that this 'newcomer' had been around since the '30's - as a stuntman.
There are literally hundreds of these examples. No matter how old you are, if you love it - TRY.

Myth #2 - IF YOU HAVE TALENT ... YOU WILL MAKE IT
Although it's important to have some talent, any reasonable observer can point to dozens of successful actors who might be considered 'talent challenged.' In fact, depending on talent alone is a strategy for disaster. There are many other skills (mostly business skills) that lead to success as an actor. If you're talented, great. But don't depend on your gifts for success. It's mostly hard work.

Myth #3 - AN ACTOR MUST BE OUTGOING
Not at all. In fact, I'd say that the opposite is closer to the truth. Most of the stars you watch and enjoy are basically shy people. It is under the cover of a role that actors seem to be demonstrative. If you are shy or retiring, you are like most successful actors. Don't sweat it.

Myth #4 - ACTING CLASS WILL RUIN YOUR NATURALNESS Wow, this one is really off base. In fact, without some training it is unlikely you will get to the top ranks of the acting profession. Agents look for training. Casting directors look for it.
And it goes without saying that education has rarely hurt anybody.

Myth #5 - HAVING AN AGENT GUARANTEES YOU WILL WORK There is no doubt that having a salesman for your acting business is beneficial - but signing with a good agent rarely happens before you have already achieved some level of success.
Actors who think an agent will automatically get them to the top, rarely get there. Agents are not magicians - they are salespeople who develop leads for your acting business.
Period.

Myth #6 - YOU CAN BECOME AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS
This almost never happens. In fact, a brief study of the careers of very successful actors will convince you that the average time it takes to get into the ranks of regularly employed actors is about 9 years.
Like becoming any sort of professional (doctor, lawyer, architect) this is a business that takes time to accomplish.
That's why they call it 'paying your dues.'

Myth #7 - ACTORS MAKE THE BIG BUCKS
No. This is totally wrong.
Sure some do ... and their salaries are publicized to the skies. But the reality is that the large majority of actors make very small paychecks and they don't make them very often. Go to SAG's website and see the statistics. Just making a decent living as an actor is a huge challenge.
Bottom line: Don't go into acting for the money. If you want to act, do it. And do it for money as often as possible.
But don't kid yourself ... this is hard work and the pay is nothing to write home about - unless you have the tenacity, business skills, and work ethic to get to the very top.
I hope you do.

Here's some good advice from the cadets at West Point:
RISK more than others think is safe.
CARE more than others think is wise.
DREAM more than others think is practical.
EXPECT more than others think is possible.

Well, since the keywords of the question are "popular actress" and "Singapore", talent will definitely not be a priority. The most important thing will be looks. For most Singaporeans, their idea of a celebrity idol is somebody who is extremely good-looking. Once you have the looks, whether you are talented or not is not very important. The ability to act will only serve as a bonus for them. But of course, if the person is extremely good-looking and has the so-called 'x-factor', even if the person can't act, they will still be labelled as 'good actors or actresses'. Honestly speaking, don't aim to be a popular actress in Singapore, that's not too high a goal. It's not even worth all the effort.

Well looks wise I think there are more beautiful girls we can glance at the streets by just walking down orchard road or just any neighbourhood can find beautiful looking girls just everywhere. So, looks and dressing is not a issue so important, as everyone here dresses skimpily clad, blame it on the weather or say it in the name of fashion or modernity. But, for acting as a career and to become popular is to get a place in the hearts of the heartlanders at home as well as worldwide, to do that, ofcourse must do or portray something in the role you take up like attracting the viewer to get hooked on you. Not necessarily glamour part, but I mean the character which you portray and the message that gets across to the society. What you speak, the way you speak, the audience should be able to understand at the first instance itself. Then costumes, make up and everything depends too. Anything of too much isnt that good, so bit of natural style, like how you behave just like ordinarily outside, type of like next door kinda... thats what the youths prefer nowadays. You must grasp the emotions, the vibes and pulse of today's youth who determine the success or failure rate of any upcoming celebrity in today's media world. There are different segments of people to cater to. For example, some movies suitable for rich and some for poor. So the divide is still there, but luckily in Singapore, there is no such divide. So, the segment is just one. So catering to that is simple. You need to target the mass audience. You need to become an mass heroine ( actress ) then they all will like you. Like super star ... So all the best, I hope you can be one. This is my view point. Got any prices for the best answer ? A pop actress should behave as a role model and set good examples of maturity, humbleness and sincerity for everyone to see. She should be able to handle her own personal issues properly and maintain a proper image in whatever she does. Not only that, she must be able to communicate with different social levels and also to win the hearts of people. An actress does not necessarily has great looks or figure but most importantly, a good character. E.g: Ms Zoe Tay has been a great example of a popular but humble actress in Singapore. That will be part of the success to gaining popularity. In addition, having great acting skills would even push the actress to a higher level of success and popularity. Whatever it may take, an essential factor to becoming a popular actress/actor, she/he must be first and foremost, has a good heart so that whatever she/he does would touch the hearts of many souls.

You will probably struggle for the next 50 years to become a popular actress in Singapore.

Who were the most popular actresses in Singapore 10 yrs ago? -Zoe Tay & Fann Wong.

Who are the most popular actresses in Singapore now? - Fann Wong..... and Zoe Tay.

Popular singer, maybe. Actress, tough. In other country, maybe you will make a name and small fame. After all, the average audience's mentality is "Foreign import is always better than homegrown".

Whatever it is,treating acting as a passion and earn a decent living,no problem. Earning big bucks, you'll be better off as a car agent. Speak to any of your friends selling Toyota and they'll tell you why.

Cheers!

Firstly, you need the talent. Next you certainly need practice followed by emotion and sincerity. You musn't be afraid to play the bad guy and have people dislike your character and you cannot have stage frights, that is very inportant. You don't really need the looks, no offense, but look at Patricia Mok, she is not very beautiful but she is a success, isn't she? You must have a kind heart. In any point, it's the inside that matters. Both my cousins, Sarah and Celestine, are models and have come up on magazines all over the world, this piece of advice is from them. They are especially popular in the USA. All the best to you!

If you are talking about nowadays, it has to be looking like a woman-child with tons of sex-appeal, viz, people like Fiona Xie. Look at all the hype she has gotten from everywhere - the public, the media, etcetera.

It's no longer termed as "actress" if you ask me; it's more of "female celebrity" in which popularity is about how much one appeals to the public based on one's physicality and sex-appeal.

Gone were the days where by acting skills were of the top priority for an actress to get into the popularity poll.

Currently, audience mainly watches the actress rather than her acting skills or the content of the show she stars in.

Work to take hardship into stride...and must definitely have a passion for acting, willing to learn is very important. And opportunity also play a very important factor become famous and popular at the same time...for local actress, the opportunity come by rarely, once have it, must grab it or else really liao. The role must be outstanding among other roles and the show must be a big hit...last of all the X-factor...is the chemistry bonding between audience and the actress,,,and one look and we know raising big star...so it is very very hard to be one popular actress...that is why it take a lot of will, if lack of any factor, you must use maximize other factor u have to sort of cover up the factor u lack of..Haiz
