Apophis will have a near miss in the year 2029 and a 1 in 300 chance of impact in 2036. We need around 10 years advanced notice to come up with an interdiction plan....other than nukes, since that would create a worse bombardment. Not all of the planet killing asteroids have been mapped. The ones that scare me are the ones that will be seen as the come from behind the sun on their elliptical paths, if they're on a collision course, it would only give us 2 years advance warning.
1950DA will hit in 877 years, too far for us worry about, but a planet killer nonetheless. I'm sure we'll have an interdiction plan by then...assuming mankind lasts that long.
The Shoemaker-Levy impact on Jupitor in 1994 made me a believer of the astronomer's ability to find and track the orbits of asteroids and comets. That particular impact had the energy of 6,000,000 megatons of TNT (750 times the world's nuclear arsenal). The plume and fireball was the size of the Earth!

I think you are referring to 99942 Apophis
From wikipedia:
(99942) Apophis (previously known by its provisional designation 2004 MN4) is a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a relatively large probability that it would strike the Earth in 2029. However, additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. However there remained a possibility that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a "gravitational keyhole", a precise region in space no more than about 400 meters across, that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. This possibility kept the asteroid at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale through August 2006.
Additional observations of the trajectory of Apophis revealed the "keyhole" would likely be missed and on August 5, 2006, Apophis was lowered to a Level 0 Torino impact hazard scale. As of August 5, 2006 the impact probability for April 13, 2036 is estimated at 1 in 43,000. Two additional impact dates, one in 2037 and the other in 2054, have been identified, however the impact probability for those is 1 in 11.8 million and 1 in 370 million respectively.

Ceres is the only asteroid that big and it's in a nice stable orbit between Mars and Jupiter. Armageddon is probably the most scientifically laughable movie ever made. The Powerpuff girls had better science.

Hehehe - don't get me started about that movie. I've seen maybe 5 minutes total of the movie, 4 and a half of which I spent yelling at the tv screen because of all the science inaccuracies!

That is pure fantasy. The sky and the orbits of any asteroids that could intersect the earth has been surveyed with that kind of question in mind and the answer is NO TRUTH

we blew it up! this happened last 4th of July, not this last one, but the one before it. we sent up a satellite to take pictures of it closer up, to make sure we needed to hit it, and on the 4th of July if you looked up in the sky you could see it blow up. i swear i remember this happening, it was like the movie, except controlled alot better, no one died or anything.
