I just adopted a cat from the animal shelter today, and I had previously noticed this, but I didn't think much of it...
His left eye is closing alot more than the right. It now has some really gross looking goo in it and it smells really bad.
I plan to take him to the vet tomorrow to get it checked out, but what is it?
(From what I understand he's been at the shelter since June. It was a no-kill shelter.)

Cat's often catch colds when their in transition. The odor makes me worry it could be an undiagnosed infection, and that could be pretty bad. Is it the smell of rot? I'd bet it was a cold, though.

Colds are a pain, but it's basically the same as for us. Plenty of rest & fluids. An infection will require antibiotics, and probably something like silver nitrate ointment to apply to the eye.

Congratulations on your new family member!

1. Yes, probably an eye infection, the vet'll probably give you some antibiotic ointment you have to put in his eyes twice a day, which they don't always like.
2. THANK YOU! for getting your cat from an animal shelter, and especially for getting him from a no-kill shelter!!!!

Try using a damp towel to clean the eye and give him temporary relief. It is a good idea to take him to the vet since you just got him.
