They are all dual core processors, they ALL have 2 cores doing the load. The Core Duo is ONLY for PC laptops (although Apple is using them in a desktop). Only the Core 2 Duo is using the new Core Microarchitecture which is better than the old architecture the other two use, and therefore the Core 2 Duo is much faster. There are Core 2 Duos available for both laptops and desktops, while the Pentium D is just for desktops.
Lastly, just in case someone decides to get technical, in some unique cases the chips can be used in other formats than what I listed, but those are there primary functions.

Core Duo and Core 2 Duo's have 2 cores on the processor to handle more of a work load.. The Pentium D is a core 2 processor with only one core working or recieving a load.

The Pentium D became Intel's answer to AMD's twin middle processor. The Pentium D is to single processors bolted at the same time to form a twin middle, on an analogous time as the middle 2 twin is unquestionably 2 processors on an analogous die, a miles extra effectual and performing technique then the Pentium D.

core 2 duo will probably be usefull in about a year so when you see a computer with a core 2 duo processor it means it can handle 64 bit applications when they are available in the future. they are also much faster than pentium d and core duo processors
in other words its future proofing your computer
