"there's not (to this date, anyway) direct evidence that Dickinson was sexually active with either men or women, she did write passionate letters to women (as did many women of that age). Some historians find this as evidence of what today would be called lesbianism -- "

It was completely appropriate in her day and age to express affection for women. Emily Dickinson was a brilliantly expressive writer and her skill is seen in her correspondence which included both men and women.

You must take into account the social nature of the times when you make judgments. For instance, Little Black Sambo was written by a British woman in India to entertain her children. The main character is not African, but Indian. This classic book has been condemned sight unseen by African Americans. If they read it, they would find out it's the story of a little boy who outsmarted three tigers. At the time it was written, the characterizations were acceptable.

She had some sexual tension with henry david thoreau, but ms. dickenson stayed quite chaste. Liking women back in those days was not percieved as sexual. Now-a-days, everyone thinks everyone is gay if they just say someone of the same sex is attractive. Innocence lost....

A lot of people think she loved Susan Gilbert who married her brother. I have to say I believe strongly that this is true. Her letters to Susan were extremely passionate.

Probably. But why not? She expressed things so well during those oppressive times. Just think how she would be today, with all our free thinking and speech.

She'd be all over the place.
