A battery contains lead and acid. When it discharges it gives off hydrogen gas which is very flammable. If a battery shorts out, a lot of gas is given off. If a spark occurs the gas will ignite---BOOM

it is amazingly easy on accurate-put up batteries, pretty fashions with vent caps. notwithstanding this is extra constructive to blend the baking soda with water once you be conscious it. A reasonably thick blend, like a pair heaping tablespoons to a cup of water, scrub and then rinse thoroughly. positioned an old rag over the vent caps once you've them, and then rinse faraway from them to prevent getting it in the battery. do not positioned on your solid clothing, and in case your pores and skin is delicate, perhaps use some rubber dish-washing gloves. careful now to not splash in eyes and such. Wash your self up solid at the same time as carried out. replace clothing and shop them cut loose different stuff, and do not set on delicate surfaces. Battery acid can devour a hollow accurate by ability of a pair of heavy jeans. They do promote those little felt washers that are chemically dealt with, that flow around the posts, below the cable terminals. they are truly valuable at scuffling with this from difficulty-free. accessible at any vehicle elements shop. if you're there, %. up a particular cord brush device to scrape the put up itself, and the contained in the cable ends, and do all of that at the same time as you've them off. And continually disconnect the adverse cable first, and re-connect it very last.

you probably went over a hard bump and your battery wasn't fastened down properly...thus the positive terminal came in contact with the body causing a direct short between the positive and negative parts of the battery,,,,this will cause it to explode..
Been there done that

This happened to me, There was a bad cell to cell conection inside the battery. It blew up in my face and pieces were scattered 50 ft in the yard. I was lucky and a hose was handy I just rinsed it off my eyes and face and ruined my shirt.
An arc inside the battery after charging made hydrogen and oxygen gasses

Car batteries produce an explosive gas, combine this with a loosely connected wire that sparks near this gas and you can imagine what might happen. Just speculating.
