To what extent are the monsters in the poem physical projections of human fears? Is there anything appealing, os sympathetic about Grendel> Who is more dangerous, Grendel, or his mother?

The function of Grendel is to be in opposition to Beowulf. Remember that Grendel has control of the court. He runs rampant at night and causes those who fear him to be in total fear. Grendel has vowed to make all suffer for incidents that occurred previously, however vague they may be. He, more importantly, causes Beowulf to question whether he is strong and loyal enough to take on the task of "ridding the hall" of him.

Grendel's mother and he are equivalent where danger is considered, but Grendel has to deal with her death, remember. He is more bitter.

This is about the only help I can give you on this as it has been a while since I've studied this poem.

beowulf is a battle of good and evil.. Grendels mother is more dangerous because she was madder than ever when grendel was murdered.

Do your own homework. You will learn alot more if you do. Thanks for the 2 points. By the way, my son just finished his report on Beowulf. Are you a senior also?
