Why is childbirth so painful - why didn't we evolve to have a more pain free childbirth as you'd think that women who'd already experienced painfree childbirth would be more likely to have more children and vice versa. If there hasn't been time for this kind of evolution to occur because of the recent introduction of birth control do you think it will happen in the future?

I take it that by all the 'god' that there's a lot of Americans on here! I was thinking of more in an evolutionary/biological sense.

it is a combination of the evolution of big-brained offspring who could still usually fit through the standard pelvis (so little change in the pelvis to accomodate larger heads) -----
and the proliferation of male doctors who, having never experienced natural childbirth, don't take the pain seriously enough to bother developing and using better pain-control methods. (speaking as both an academic and a mother)

Why are you even asking this? Of course childbirth hurts!! You will never, ever go through anything this painful in your life! You could be in a car accident, break both your legs and a couple of ribs and not even be close to the amount of pain that you would be in while giving birth to a child. Age has nothing to do with it. It hurts no matter what age you are. I was in labor for 26 hours and it wasn't fun but it was worth it. You make it less painful by giving birth in a hospital so that they can give you drugs and/or an epidural to block the pain. Don't let the pain deter you though. I gave birth just over 9 weeks ago and it is the most painful, life changing experience ever. I would do it all over again in a moment. If the only way I could keep my son would be to go through that amount of pain every day for the rest of my life I would. If you are young though I would consider a heck of a lot more things than just pain. You have to raise the baby and pay for things you know. It isn't easy at all.

Depends on what you believe. Those of us who believe in God can thank Eve. If you believe in evolution, I'm not sure, but the whole labor/childbirth thing is so complex and if I remember correctly (I wasn't good at Science) things evolved for survival purposes. Whether it hurts like hell or not we'll still live.

I guess no matter what we believe we should be very thankful for the option of the epidural.

You forget; it was the rapid growth of the brain/skull that made child birth such a hassle for human woman. I do not think it will " evolve " away. The selection pressure is not that great. It is a hassle for woman, but not great enough to be selection pressure.

God said women will bear children in pain as the results of sin in the Garden Of Eden, Men will earn their living by the sweat of their brow and the serpent will forever crawl in the dirt on its stomach for his part in sin. And that is why there is pain in childbirth. You can have an epidural and that will help the pain.
You can also have your baby with no drugs, that's the best way.
Just endure the pain it's nothing you can't stand.

If you are religious-God planned it-it's in the bible that women are given painful labor..

If you are emotional-you may think that without the pain there is no gain and thus birthing must be difficult..

If you are medical in thought processing-you know it has to be painful since your body is squeezing something so small out of it..rearranging every organ and modifying your every cell for this being can't be painless.

My approach? Philosophical..in all beauty there is pain and it is deep and it is sweet..birth is like death and it is always painful and it is always necessary.

a promise from the Word of God in regard to Eve and her disobedience shared with future generations -
there are options now during the delivery time but the body still has to have time to heal

know you cannot outdo God
