Never had a problem with my Saturn before but suddenly am having trouble getting the car to shift out of park. I've tried wiggling the gear shift, steering wheel, etc. but have found the only think that works (and it may be a fluke) is pumping the brake a few times. I've been told there is possible a sensor that is going bad. Anyone else had this problem or heard of it?

Possibly the brake switch has gone bad.

Does your brake lights not come on when you step on the brakes?

If the brake lights don't come on then it's your brake light switch. This switch is located on the brake pedal about half way up the brake pedal and where it connects to the master cylinder.

Follow the brake pedal up and there's a switch that is depressed when the brake is in the rest position and opens up when you press on the brake. I would recommend replacing this switch.

My 1997 automatic SC2 has this problem also, and has had it for about three years. I was told by the Saturn place that it is the Betsy Solenoid that has gone bad. It is located under the gear shift and is a real pain to get to, and quite costly to have someone else repair. I was also told that it's not hurting my car, just annoying me. My car tends to do this when the weather is cold (30 degrees F or cooler). My trick has always been to let the car "warm up" a little bit, make sure the brake is fully pressed in, and I have pressed the button on the gearshift in all the way. It can be very tricky, but has always gone into gear eventually. It is frustrating, but not enough (yet) for me to shell out the cash to get it fixed!

Check to see if you have brake lights. If not it's the BOO (Brake On/Off) Switch.
