It really wasn't all Indian culture that affected him --- remember, he was educated at Oxford as an attorney-at-law. He was deeply influenced by the writings of Plato, particularly "The Republic"; he was also appreciative of the New Testament, and the teachings of Jesus Christ, even though he himself was a Hindu. This influenced his brilliant formulation of non-violence, but not surrendering one's dignity.

This is too important a question to be answered simply, here. I suggest you go to his autobiography, and various websites that have some biographical material. You're just gonna hafta do some research.

But, enjoy the work! Then, you will REALLY know something, not just what someone else tells you.
