I'm trying my luck as an author.

Is there a website that will let you post your stuff? Sort of like fanfiction.com, but for original stories?

Send them to literary journals and magazines.

Below is a list you can use to get you started. It tells you about who pays and who doesn't, and it also tells you which magazines literary agents look at in order to find new talent.

Online magazines that post fiction usually don't pay.

It would be easier if you created your own website and posted it there.

But if you are serious about being an author, I would try the literary markets.

Good Luck!

i recommend self-publishing. I self-published a book through http://www.lulu.com/
they are completely free and very easy to use. You can then buy a global distribution, or ISBN, which will put your book on Barnes and noble, borders, amazon.... i really like lulu, i think they are great. They also offer a great customer service if you get stuck.
If you think they are too good to be true (which was my original opinion) you can view my book at http://www.lulu.com/dchooper
Hope this helps. Good luck with your writing.
For any more information about Lulu you can contact me at forensic_dreamer@hotmail.com (if you do contact me, put Lulu in the subject line, or i might report as spam)
Cheers, Deanna.

The first thing to do is register it with the library of congress (http://www.loc.gov/index.html)

The next thing to do is buy a writer's guide. The writer's guide will tell you how and who to submit to, usually according to genre.
