I came from a very poor family, and growing up with other kids who were "not" poor, had pretty much what they wanted, much less what they needed, was tough
at times. Some of these children would tease me till I cried, simply because I didn't have the nice things their parents provided. One day my teacher saw me crying around the side of the school building, and stopped to ask why? I told her some of the kids had called me ugly and stupid, simply because of my clothes. My teacher said that even though new clothes are nice to wear, it had nothing to do with how smart I was or was not. And that I could grow up to be anything I set my mind on, and not to worry about petty, rude words those kids said to me. Well, I always loved animals, and wanted to work with them somehow. I grew up and decided to become an Animal Control Officer. Those animals couldn't care less
"what" I wear, as long as I'm loving and gentle to them.
I loved my teacher for telling me those kind words, and she had a positive impact on my life.

In primary school our classes divided for maths. The maths teacher is also the physical education teacher. I have always been very good at math. This teacher favoured athletes if you played up in his class you got laps of the oval. He was also abusive to the less sporty during team games and sports afternoons. I will never ever play team sports. I could run like the wind but I would not compete at all while he was around. He has made me abhor competition of any sort. He has made me abhor sports.

this story isn't of me but of my husband. we were both music education majors in college. he played the trumpet for the band but his biggest talent was in teaching music and theory to others. he was a good player don't get me wrong, but since we attended a school whose band was nationally renowned the band director told him that " sometimes in life we have to realize that we won't be what we want to be. because we aren't talented enough. sometimes we have to choose something else..i think that this is one of those times. you can't get your degree without passing my course and you won't pass my course being a third trumpet." so my husband quit school. he is now a fast food manager. very smart, talented as a teacher, but wasting his time and hating himself. this is one of those rare occasions when teachers need to realize the negative affect that they have on peoples lives. even with one conversation.
