There is a difference between England and Great Britain.England is a country.Great Britain is an island composed by Ireland,Wales,and England.

England never turned into Great Britain, it is a part of Great Britain. Great Britain is the island, England is the country within. Contrary to a previous answer, Great Britain is not made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, it is made up of England, Wales and Scotland. That person is getting confused with the UK, which is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (I am from England so I know this.)
