I'm close to a solution, but encountered a contradiction with 10 squares left. As for original clues, I'm unsure of my answer to 3 times the integral of X squared dx (I said 1), and one square looks like -(2^-2), which is -0.25 (I used 2), so that can't be right either.

That was a funny puzzle - one of my students brought it in and showed me. The integral is 3x^3/3 which is x^3; I can't recall the indices; were they 2 and 1? If so it is 8 - 1 or 7. And the one you thought was -(2^-2) was actually -(i^2) which is -(-1) or 1.
