As a rule, the spark plug is off to one side of the combustion chamber. This varies from make to make and the shape of the combustion chamber. This is why a good engine tuner will index the plug. If you have seen the tip of a spark plug, you will notice the outside wire, which is welded to the outer threaded part, will hide the center electrode. The idea is to have this wire facing the outside edge of the combustion chamber so the spark is totally facing into the compressed fuel and air to get a more complete combustion. I can see where this might have an advantage on a 5000 hp fuel dragster but in an ordinary street car it would'nt be worth the trouble.

Indexing is not the same as gapping it's when you put the spark plugs in so the open end of the spark plug is facing down. According to studies this adds more horsepower.

NO its NOT the same as gapping, you get a marker like a sharpie and draw a line from the top of the insulator to the bottom of the insulator(the shiny porcelon part) that points to the gap or open part of the electrode ,then get crush washers that will allow you to install plug with gap aimed at the incomming fuel charge.lots of work for the 1 or 2 horsepower at best that it will give you.Highly reccommended for bench racing sessions where knowledge of this will be worth 50-100 horsepower!!lol
