we took the carpet off the diningroom floor and want to refinish the hardwood but it is badly stained and ammonia is not making much of a difference can anyone help?

you;re in trouble. try paint stripper followed by bleach. then sand with a power hand sander to the bare wood. don't try a rented floor sander. after that re-finishing is a whole differant endeavour. you might be better off to hire a professional or just recarpet it. believe me iv'e been through that grief.

Yes, it can be bleached out ... but not with laundry bleach. You need to find "wood bleach", which is oxalic acid, and follow the instrucitons carefully. Search Google for these words: urine stains hardwood bleach

Hire a professional. Sanding should take care of the stains.

Get in touch w/ your local home improvement center to rent a floor sander. refinish. topcoat!!

oh my don't use those harsh chemicals... try lemon juice let it dry and if it is still dark by hand or small sander just sand it p.s the more liquid you put on it your dark spot will grow.
