A long vowel sound is a vowel that says itself. Or, that's how I always remembered it. So, when you pronounce a word, you hear the letter A (or another vowel).
Here's two examples not on your list: Bean (you hear the E), Fine (you hear the I).
Just say the words out loud, or read each syllable slowly.
Good luck!

The long A is the sound in gate; short a is apple.

Long E is the sound in evil.

Long I is, well I (same sound as eye)

Long O is the sound in obey

Long u -- oops! I can't think of a word.

So, using those words as guide, say each word on the list. If one of them is using those long vowels, it's one of the ones.
