2*2 + 2 = 6 so (2,2) does not lie on the line

2*3+2 = 8 so (3,2) does line on the line

You need to plug the values for x and y that were given to you into the equation. Whichever point provides a BALANCE on both sides of the equation, will reveal which of the two points lies on the graph of the line.

Let's see:

2x + y = 8

We have two points:

(2,2) and (3,2) for (x,y).

Let's plug each point into the equation.

2x + y = 8

2(2) + 2 = 8

4 + 2 = 8

6 DOES NOT = 8. Thus, the point (2,2) is not on the line.

Obviously the other point is on the line but let's check anyway.

2x + y = 8

2(3) + 2 = 8

6 + 2 = 8

8 = 8

Hey, it checks!

The point that lies on the graph of the line 2x + y = 8 is (3,2).

A. plug in x=2 and y=2, and you get 6=8, which is false, so this point is not on the line
B. plug in x=3 and y=2, and you get 8=8, so the equation of the line is satisfied. Therefore the point is on the line.
