depends on the context.

If you're looking at philosophy, this could mean that only an educated person has the ability to search out data, sort it, analyze it and form his/her own opinion rather on relying on someone else to tell them how they should think.

Therefore the educated person is 'free' to think for themselves.

Well take this yahoo thing for example. An undeducated person wouldn't have the ability to get online and ask for homework help.

Look at the job market. If you only have a high school diploma, you can't get much out there. If you have a bachelor's degree from a university, there's much more job opportunites availible. If you have a Ph.D or a medical degree or a law degree, you have more opportunites than anyone.

If I have a high school diploma, I can't get a job as a teacher. I just can't . Now if I had a degree, maybe not in teaching but maybe in math, then I could probably get a job teaching math at a middle school or high school.

Hope that helps.

Sto⋅ic  /ˈstoʊɪk/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [stoh-ik] –adjective 1. of or pertaining to the school of philosophy founded by Zeno, who taught that people should be free from passion, unmoved by joy or grief, and submit without complaint to unavoidable necessity. 2. (lowercase) stoical. –noun 3. a member or adherent of the Stoic school of philosophy. 4. (lowercase) a person who maintains or affects the mental attitude advocated by the Stoics. --------------------------------------..... I knew "stoic" meant expressionless, but I didn't know WHY, so thanks...your question made me just a little smarter! ;-) (Now...if I only knew who this Zeno fellow was) And yes, I have had that expression before, though I honestly wish I were better at it. It cracks me up when I see someone going completely ballistic at someone and that person simply stands there with a "stoic expression." It infuriates the irate person even more. It's hilarious.

Well everyone is gonna have a different opinion on this matter. To me, the quote means that only those with a proper education have the chances and oppertunities to do whatever they want with their lives.

If you have an education than the world is open before you and you are indeed free.
I would suggest though that you try and think up some ideas for yourself. If you expect others to think for you, you will never be able to think for yourself and you will be a slave to others!
