A redshirt freshman is a sports term for a freshman that practices with the team but never plays in a game that year in order to save a year of his eligibility.
This is used in a case when you have a great Jr QB and a Freshman QB almost as good on the same team. By the time the older one graduates, the younger will still have 3 years of eligibility left to play.
