It's normal to ask for an SSN to do a background check. It benefits you to some extent -- protects you from being confused with someone with your name who has a record, when of course you don't.
I wouldn't be any more worried about prospective employers having my SSN than I am about anyone else who has it or has access to it. That is to say, I check my credit regularly, but I'm not paranoid.
Bad credit, on its own, doesn't affect a hiring decision -- but if someone were deeply in debt, I wouldn't necessarily let him or her handle cash or an easy means to get it.

It is possible that your ss# could get out, but the people who collect that info see hundreds of numbers a day. I wouldn't be too concerned, but don't give it out if you aren't interested in the job. Thankfully, nowadays, even your ss# doesn't mean much anymore. Credit companies and banks want a lot more info to access your accounts. It is a weak point in ID theft security, though (having to give out your ss# so much).
There are codes/laws that require that kind of info be locked up and only certain people have access to it, so it's not like anyone in the company can access potential hires' ss#'s. I would only be mildly wary of the smaller companies and less reputable businesses.

Hi there,
1) can't the prospective employers simply check previous employers to see how you did?
2) Would you hire someone who has baggage that could cause a lot of extra work ----? if there were other suitable candidates?
Finally - why not become self-employed? If there is an interest in this, please feel free to drop me an email. I may have some perspectives that could be of help.
Keep Smiling!

one, if you don't want to, they have to respect that, but you have to respect that they need to look into who you are and what you may be hiding.
employers are responsible for safeguarding your private information even if they don't hire you. they could be sued if it was used improperly. my company takes it seriously.
we do ask for a S.S. number to run a background check, but I deal with nurses so it might be out of the ordinary. they know they have to.
don't worry, if someone wants to mess with you, they will, your potential employer doesn't care, worry more about what's in the trash outside your house.
