my PC is an Athlon 64 2GHz, 1GB PC3200, GeForce 6200 128mb AGP card, Custom Built.

I would go for the 2 17" monitors but make sure you have the right graphics card to make it work also I think that 1280x1024 is the best resolution

Cost wise, I've always found that you will get more real estate buying two monitors in place of wide one. My own office is set up that way, althought I am familiar with the wide variety being that I work on a wide screen laptop.

Honestly, if you have the space, two 17" monitors will give you more room to work. Widescreen monitors are nice but they tend to be more expensive for less space.

unless you do a lot of multiple programs at once and are willing ti put work into getting them to work well at once two monitors arnt worth it. but borrow some ones old crt and hook it up to see if you can even set up your vid card to do it. good luck

You should buy 2 LCD monitors it's better then just one.
