Well this is actually very possible. I am a mechanic by trade and it is a very common problem i see on newer cars. If the gas cap is not on all the way ( usually turn it 3 times) there will be a vacuum loss in the tank and the computer picks it up. The computer controls the check engine light. I dont think that she should have been charged for tightening the gas cap but....there are people out there and would do anything for a buck. Hope this helps. Tony

(Check Engine Light) There are many components that work together in the engine to maintain optimal engine performance and economy. A service engine soon, or check engine light indicates that there is a sensor that is reading a condition that is "out of range". Simply resetting the light does not solve the initial cause of the problem. Replacing a number of parts trying to troubleshoot the problem in the hopes of getting the light to stay off is a tremendous waste of time and money. The simplest, and most economical way to alleviate your issue, is to have an engine diagnostic done by a reputable shop to determine what caused the computer to signal you to begin with. Just reading the computer codes may not find the "cause". That being said, if per-chance you feel the need to reset the light in the hopes that it was a "glitch" of some kind, you could disconnect the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes to clear the check engine light.

Yes this is possible. I'm a certified mechanic and if you fuel up your car while it's running or leave the cap loose it will turn on the light due to the evaporitive emissions system. If it comes on again due to the same thing the car has a leak in this system.

Yes this is true. It happened to me and I was told the same thing. The fuel line gets air in it and becomes vapor locked. Just make sure your fuel cap is tight!!!
