I am writing a story and in my story there are a few text messages being sent. Would the text messages be in quotation marks?

Yes.

Any thing you could do that would distinguish them from the rest of the story or conversation would be appropriate. There is not a specific rule. Quotation marks or italics or bold or all caps or with a dash before and after... just be consistent so that it's clear to your reader that it's for a text message.

Excellent question.
I don't think there is a grammar convention for this yet.
You could use quotes, or you could use some other convention that you made up.
As long as you are consistent throughout your story, I think it would be fine.

Another possibility that I can think of is simply separating the text message on a separate line from the other text, like this:

Sarah quickly pulled out her phone and typed a text message:

R u hungry? Wanna do lunch?

Bill replied:

No gotta work

Sarah felt devastated. She felt like this was the last nail in the coffin of their relationship...

I think I like this better than quotes, because text messages aren't actually said, after all.

If someone is saying something to someone else, either in a letter or person to person, the answer is "yes" you would use quotation marks because that is what you are doing, quoting someone. (The same applies to text messages of course).

Yes, but if it is three or more lines long on your paper, you need to increase the margins on either side and make it a mini paragraph itself, and when you do that you don't need quotation marks.

Yes because the text is indirectly said.

Yes. Anything that is spoken, whether it be in words or via text is put in quotes.

Yes, I think that would be the appropriate thing to do. You have to show somebody said it (typed it in) somehow, right.

100% yes. You are quoting what others are saying.
