I don't have a digital hook-up where I live, so cable is out of the question. I *have* to use the phone line. Right now, my laptop and PC both have 56k modems. But I'm tired of waiting 7 days for a file to finish downloading. How do I go about changing from dial-up to DSL? What do I need? Who is the best provider? Who is the cheapest provider? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! :o)

Well you will need a DSL ISP. What is cheaper really depends upon your geographical area as well. I have Verizon at $24.95 for Fast DSL, with a bundled package.

What you will need - don't go out & purchase anything. The ISP's will provide you with a DSL Modem/Router and filters for all of your telephone lines as well as detailed installation instructions. Or, you can request a technician to do the installation for you, but it really is easy.

Here's a DSL comparison site:

Cable and Satellite may or may not be the cheapest - it usually is not.

First, you'll have to find out if you have DSL in your area. Usually you just type in your phone number on the website. When you get DSL, they should send you a DSL modem and some filters. The filters hook up to your phones to correct any interference. The DSL modem conects to the phone line (through a filter) using a regular phone cable, and connects to your PC or notebook using a CAT5 cable (they sell them at Wal-Mart). It connects to your network connection on your computer (looks like a phone line plug in, only a little bigger).

I use Bellsouth. $24.95/month for their basic service. Their highest speed is 1.5Mbps for around $45.

If it says it has 10/one hundred Mbps then that port on the decrease back is probable your ethernet ports. Ethernet ports look basically like telephone ports different than they're a splash extra desirable. attempt plugging a telephone twine in there and notice if suits. If it would not extra healthful it is the place you may plug your ethernet twine in to.
