I tend to admire strong women in my family. Most of them are dead now and I am delegated to be the strong woman.

My great grandma Kelley came over on a boat from Ireland when she was 16 with her b/f no less, and lived to be 98. Blind the last 10 years of her life she refused to live with her kids and hired a companion to live with her in her house so she "didn't have to answer to anyone but herself."

My great aunt Gretha(Grandma Kelley's youngest daughter) also lived to be in her 90's, well after the love of her life, my great uncle George passed on. She was a tough, hard drinking fun loving woman who lost her uterous and nearly her life to a botched back room abortion in the 20's when she was 19. She and Uncle George drove fast, drank hard and loved each other forever. When Uncle George was dying, she told me she wasn't going to let him die until she was done with him. And when she was done, he died. She loved Teddy Kennedy and was a hard line Democrat who hated Republicans and christian hypocrites. They taught me to drink tequila out of a bottle in a paper bag passed between us while Uncle George tried to not fall off a mountain while driving too fast and too drunk, pulling a huge trailer on a summer trip I took with them when I was 15. They lived life, period.

I also admire my daughters, who are young, intelligent, thoughtful women who can actually hold a political argument and hold their own. They have done everything right in their lives and I am completely proud of them.

I admire any woman who can sing, because I can't.

Peggy Bundy (married with children) - supposedly here is a woman who has two crappy kids and a crappy hubby, yet she keeps herself dolled up, rules the roost, never does one thing she does not want to do and appears to be quite content without all the flash gear or the break neck career. And possibly the first tv wife to have sexual desires.

Oprah Winfrey (intelligence and compassion), Quentin Crisp (gay activcism and sophisticated wit) and all the family and friends of the victims of the Bali bombings (courage and strength).

I would have to say my 1st hero would be my dad...who fought a long, courageous fight against cancer, to which he succumbed in March of 1991. And then I would have to say, anyone who takes pride in their diversity, takes a stand and fights against all the hate-filled, narrow-minded bigots of this world...you are heroes to all of us.
