The Romero original was a fine film - had heard there was going to be a remake though. Remember watching it on a TV horror double bill and then getting it on dvd. The anchor bay dvd is a great example of how to do a dvd well, with the restoration and documentaries. Think it is a good allegory of the confusion of war and a great film in its own right and watching it seems almost like a trial run for dawn of the dead

In the movie Escape from New York, the crazies were the gangs
that were underground in tunnels and sewers. Is this what you
are talking about? I loved that movie when it came out and the
music by Issac Hayes.
Is there a new movie out by this name?
