My lower back muscles feel very strained, inflammed, and irritated. Within the last two years I've pulled a bicept and stomach muscle. This time, I was doing a yoga work out tape at home. When I breath in and out my muscles or organ on the left side feels irritated also. I am 22 years old 5'4 and 124lbs, out of shape and haven't execised extensively since about two years ago. I'm just trying to decide if this is severe enough to go to the emergency room right now.

When I was taken to the hospital on a stretcher in an ambulance, the therapy was to put ice on my back until the pain was gone and then do sit-up with my knees bent up at about 45 degrees. Have been doing sit-ups in bed for many years. I can do about 100, but only do 50 morning and night. It seems strange, but working on the stomach helps the back. Resting your arms on a desk is part of the problem. Start with a few and slowly increase over time, but make it a regular part of your life and you won't have this problem in the future.

AVOID the following exercises during initial recovery unless your doctor or physical therapist says it is okay:

Jogging
Football
Golf
Ballet
Weight lifting
Leg lifts when lying on your stomach
Sit-ups with straight legs (rather than bent knees)

Call 911 if you have lost bowel or bladder control. Otherwise, call your doctor if you have:

Unexplained fever with back pain.
Back pain after a severe blow or fall.
Redness or swelling on the back or spine.
Pain traveling down your legs below the knee.
Weakness or numbness in your buttocks, thigh, leg, or pelvis.
Burning with urination or blood in your urine.
Worse pain when you lie down or pain that awakens you at night.
Very sharp pain.
Also call if:

You have been losing weight unintentionally
You use steroids or intravenous drugs.
You have never had or been evaluated for back pain before.
You have had back pain before but this episode is distinctly different.
This episode of back pain has lasted longer than four weeks.

You might have a strain, along with some buildupof that lactic acid stuff you get when you use underexercised muscles. Did you stretch before you did your Yoga?

If you're feeling numbness or extreme pain in your legs, you might have pinched your sciatic nerve. Unless you are in extreme pain and find it unbearable to sit, you probably haven't done anything extremely serious. If you go to the doctor, they might prescribe a muscle relaxant if you're having clamps or spasms. Otherwise, they'll probably tell you to take it easy for awhile. You can take anti-inflammatorys to reduce any swelling and curb the pain. Some of those icy hot patches and stuff work really great too.

I'd say if it gets worse in the next few days, or you're in constant pain then yeah.... a trip to the doc wouldnt hurt. Otherwise, you've done what we'll all do at least a few times in our lives- overworked an out of shape muscle. It happens. :) I hope you feel better!

sounds like it can be diverticulitis with pain radiating to your back especially with the pain on the left side I had this about 2 months ago & spent a weekend in the hospital then 10 day on antbiotics. I would have it checked out!

Aleve and heat helps a lot.
I really like those Thermacare heat wraps. It may take up to 30 minutes or more for them to get really warm, so be patient. But wrap one of those around your back and it will stay warm for hours and hours (up to 12, I think). When my lower back hurts, this is really the only thing that helps it.

dont go to ER. Probably just a strained muscle, use ice, dont use that muscle for a week, and take NSAIDS. Aleve, Advil, Ibu, Motrin, etc.
If it continues past 1-2 weeks, consult your GP.

maybe not ER, but jus a normal doctor, and see what they think, its probably the lack of exercise... if it gets worse you might got thru physical therapy? i have scoliosis, theres alot of exercises for back injuries.... just go to a normal doctor, not ER. Good Luck, i know back pain is THE WORST, ive been in alot of pain b/c of it, it sucks i know.... Good Luck, im sure its nothing too severe

Percogesic!! It is over-the-counter and beats anything out there. You can get it at wal-mart, k-mart, or just about anywhere. Ask a pharmacist and they can tell you where it is. Don't buy the generic brand, it doesn't work as good.
