Was it just a different type of seed or were these pumpkins affected by the weather or something?

There are many different varieties of pumpkins, and they all have their own characteristics. The lumpy pumpkins are likely a variety that are more prone to imperfections of the skin. During the growing season, the pumpkins may have been exposed to hail or insect damage that healed and scarred. Provided that the pumpkins are mature and handled with care, these imperfections do not create problems and may lend extra character to your jack-o-lantern.

Pumpkins are like people: some are smooth and round; others are bumpy and lumpy. Still others have sad faces, and some have crooked smiles. Some are orange; some have green marks. Some are.... Anyway, the stupid thing may have been in a hail storm. No just go pick one and stop being so picky!

Hi there!

MD resident here too! The bumps & lumps are probably from a virus or bacteria unfortunalty. Here are 2 sites that talk about possible problems. I heard on the news that we are actually in a pumpkin shortage because the farmers lost over 75% of their crops this season! So I guess if we still have our local patches with some bumps we are the lucky ones.

Hope this helps.

:-)
