Good question. This was Speilbergs first film I think, and Dennis Weavers first major movie role. I've seen it a few times, part and in whole, but never got a clue as to who the truck driver was. I think this was Speilberg's magic at that time. If you study him, you'll find out that he, Speilberg, always wants to keep things from you, like Hitchcock did. Movie made you think, right? Isn't that what it's all about?

BTW - Did you notice at the end of the movie, Dennis Weaver didn't try to go down to the wreck to see who the SOB was? He just sat there pondering. He was still afraid. What a great ending!

Yeah, about 5 or 6 times. It showed up on the late late movie for I don't know how many years. Great movie about a maniac on the road. McCloud was the perfect actor for the role.

Cary Loftin is the truck driver. On IMDB, he is mostly listed as a stunt driver or stunt coordinator.

I don't know what he looks like and you never see his face except for a glimpse in the side mirror. I think that is the whole idea of the movie--you never know, it could be anyone.

Yes. It's creepy to think 'they' are out there but the truck driver's identity isn't really important to the underlying tone of the film.

Yes, we own it, and I think it's one of the most boring movies IN THE WORLD! I actually watched most if not all of the movie in fast forward. Give me a second and I will go look.

ok hubby loves this movie and he says that the driver is Cary Loftin.....we are watching the director comments to see where he is

Yup - it's a demon truck and it comes from hell...... it's true. I really liked the movie.... If you notice at the end of the movie, it comes from under the ground onto the road - so it is supernatural.

cool and suspenseful;you are not to know about the "unseen" Menace in the truck for obvious reasons.Spielberg's first movie definitely jumpstarted his career!
