It's a good idea to not just know the answer, but know how to solve this on a quiz or test. Here's how you do it:
First step is to turn the words into mathematical notation...
(4 more than 2 times a number ) equals 20
replace "2 times a number" with "2x"
and "more than" with "plus"
(4+2x)=20
From there you subtract 4 from both sides
2x=16
and divide both sides by 2
x=8

start guessing numbers. first, let's try 5. 5*2=10+4=14
Ok that won't work. how about 7? 7*2=14+4=18
close but not yet. let's try 8. 8*2=16+4=20
Yes! that number works. so the number is eight.
