Well, while Ashley paints an interesting picture. I believe the gender stereotypes are that men must be hunter/gatherer, emotionally unattached, and aggressive while women are the caretakers, emotionally entangled, and passive. I know that there are usually elements to the stereotypes that are common to the group they are associated with (be it culture, gender or age, for example), but to prejudge a group by the stereotype is wrong. Women can be unattached, men can be caretakers, men can be emotionally entangled, women can be aggressive, it's all in the mix :) And yes, it's society that has taught us our stereotypes (people as a group or culture). I personally can't stand stereotypes, and the masculine/feminine one bugs me the most, but then again, I'm not fond of society's rules either.

Feminine sex role stereotype - A thin, young, attractive blonde-haired, blue-eyed housewife wears heels while vacuuming the carpet, prepares dinner for hubby and gleefully and dutifully sucks her husbands pork sword at midnight while watching David Letterman.
Masculine sex role stereotype - A muscle jock in his prime with olive, toned skin and a huge co-k stays on after work to pound his secretary's beaver while the wife vacuums the carpet at home waiting so she can blow her cheating hubby's c0ck
The stereotypes are enforced by a patriarchal society so men stay in power..
