My son is allergic to milk. He had a blood test done, and it was confirmed. His allergist said he would be ok on soy milk. Is lactaid a soy milk? Is it ok to give to him? We are trying to wean him off his formula to soy milk, and wast sure if this was ok to give him.

No, Lactaid is NOT a soy milk. It is milk for people who are lactose intolerant (not the same as allergic). It has the enzyme added which lactose intolerant people are missing to be able to digest properly.
You don't give the age, so he must be off formula. You must look for cartons which say SOY MILK. Some people like rice milk or goat milk, too. I have heard almond milk is the tastiest (but make sure he's not allergic to nuts, either). You are going to have to be so careful with foods - really try to avoid pre-packaged stuff - try to get the listing of things that mean "milk" or "derived from milk" - I know you have to avoid things that have whey or whey powder. Hope your allergist gave you a list, or you could get back to him and ask for it from the nurse.

I'm not sure about Lactaid, but I think with that stuff they only take out the lactose on that milk. If you can get him some organic soy milk. I got some of this stuff and it tasted good. They have different flavors that he might like also.

Since you put this under Newborn and Baby, then I will assume your child is a baby. There is formula made specifically for this and it is called soy formula. EVERY formula company makes a soy formula for babies that are allergic to milk. Children are not allowed any kind of milk other than formula until they are 1 year of age.

If your son is 1 yr or older, then look in your dairy case where the milk is located. You should see several different types of soy milks there. I drank only soy milk for years and my personal preference in taste was the brand called Silk.

Did he get the stick test done by the allergist? Because my daughter's blood test said she was allergic to milk also. But then we got the stick test and it turned out she wasn't, it was a lab error. We could've changed her whole life for a mistake. Just wondering. I don't know about lactaid.

Go to www.kidswithfoodallergies.org for more info about food allergies.
Lactaid is not a good option. Common soy milks are Silk and 8th Continent.
You should also check out www.foodallergy.org to find a list of uncommon names for milk and things to watch out for.

What specifically is he allergic to - lactose? If it's a lactose allergy, then lactaid is fine - it doesn't contain lactose. How old is your son? Young infants shouldn't be given milk anyways. Didn't you ask your doctor about this? This isn't an issue you should take lightly - you need to ask your doctor!

As others have recommended, please speak to your son's physician. Yahoo Answers is not the place to go for direction concerning significant health issues particularly when concerning a child of any age.

Please go ask your doctor rather than stangers. Why would you leave the health of your child in other peoples hands rather than somebody you trust? Every child is different and the answer might be yes for one person and no for the next.
