It's another web browser. Some people like that it's supposed to be more secure - but if your PC is set up right & you use it wisely, there's no big difference in security.
I've tried IE, Firefox, Mozilla, Safari & Opera. I got the best performance from Opera. But I have now gone back to Internet Explorer (version 7). There are simply too many web pages that DO NOT WORK with other browsers. And I'm not talking about obscure sites - I'm talking about mainstream pages, like my (large national) bank's website.
You can download another browser & use more than 1, depending on whatever your criteria is. But you will have separate sets of bookmarks/favourites to maintain - and that's a pain.
This information is my opinion - based on 28 years writing software, 25 years as a computer owner, 20 years as a professional software developer/designer & 10 years online.

it is indeed safer, and it's open source so it means that anyone in the world can join in in improving it unlike internet explorer which is only worked on by microsoft staff.
it must be good, because the latest versions of internet explorer have stolen many standard firefox features, namely tabbed browsing and other stuff which firefox has had for ages.
oh, and aside from not falling foul of spyware and such firefox also has themes and extensions so you can customise how it works and looks :)
you could use both, but i see no reason to. on the many computer's that i fix i remove all references to internet explorer and install mozilla firefox instead - most users don't tend to notice the difference but it means i won't see their pc again in a month or two compared to the ones with internet explorer on which get end up riddled with nasties from surfing the 'net.

yes its a lot safer coz it has different ways to connect the internet, not like the IE that known by hackers... its abolutely free. i use it. it's faster, has a tabbed browsing so it wont clutter the taskbar; has a pop-up blocker, an ad-blocker, and its integrtaed w/ yahoo, google, etc... yes u can switch between IE and firefox, use the options tool...use it... i recommended...

It's just another internet browser.
I wouldn't say it's any safer, but I find the features to be better.
It has tabbed browsing (although, the new version of IE has added this, but it's still not as good)
It always doesn't crash nearly as much as IE.

yeah its free and works faster most of the time it also has a feature called tabs which if you keep many pages open it keeps the bottom bar of you computer neater also nice if you are into the news you can open all the articalsto fuul size and guickly glimpse them . and it is saver since its not linked to all your other microsft software. which also removes a lot of the temptation for hacking.
