If I don't pick on you then you really mean nothing to me.....
My friends and I pick on each other because we are close enough to do so....not in a hurtful way either....
Friends don't actually insult each other they fool around and pick on each other..
examples...
#1..friends picking on one another
"My plant is dying what should I do?"
"Use some breath freshener dude!when you breathe on it your rank breath is suffocating it!HAHAHA!"
#2...Insulting someone
"Hi,my name is Joe!"
"oh my god dude!what's up with your face?!your really f**king ugly!"
I know they're not great examples but there is a major difference

I had a friend once who wasn't very flashy. In her words, she was plain. I am not afraid to wear bright colors & whenever I did she would "jokingly" make fun of me. I think secretly she wished she could feel comfortable wearing the colors I did and it made her feel better to knock me down a couple of pegs.
And for the close friends that blatantly insult each other all the time with comments like "boo, you whore", "look, it's your boyfriend", "did your mom have any kids that weren't retarded?", etc. I think they do that because they know it's sooo not true about you and they're the only ones who can get away with it.

Well, as guys, we generally don't feel as comfortable expressing ourselves to each other about the fact that we care. An insult, when it is known that it doesn't mean anything, is the way we say "Hey man, you're all right. But don't go getting any ideas that I like you or anything." Even when we express ourselves, it's very defensive.

Its a way of saying... i know that we are close enough to say something mean and fight provoking and have nothing happen because we are good friends. Depending on the context...either just joking or really mean and how often done is a sign of how close of a friend he/she is.
Guys do it just as a joke to tease them, while girls do it as a way of provoking their friend into change, usually positive.
i.e. "girl..........you have thunder thighs!"

It is one of their ways of expressint their friendship to you. (If you can radiate that they are just "messing with" you). Also you can tell when they are really insulting you. So... If you have those types of friends... well if they are making fun of you It's just harmless "roasting" (just messing with you). Otherwise, they are really hurting you.

because friends see all sides, good and bad, of you. and because we are human beings we get mad at eachother, so we dont realli care what they think since they are so close.
they see the good side of you, so when you call them a demented freak..etc. they wont think youre a bad person
