Has any major league baseball player ever won Rookie of the Year and then MVP the following year?

Cal Ripken won the ROY in 1982, and the MVP award the following season.

Johnny Bench came close, winning ROY in 1968 and MVP two years later. I guess Ryan Howard now has a good shot at being the second, depending how the vote goes this year.

ichiro won MVP and rookie of the year in the same season, which is a completely different accomplishment that what the asker wanted to know
