The mobile phase (moving phase) is that phase that moves over the stationary phase. While the stationary phase is the phase that does not move.

The mobile phase is usually a liquid like methanol. And the stationary phase is usually a silicon plate or paper.

The stationary phase is usually nonpolar and attracts nonpolar substances to stay to it while the mobile phase is usually polar and attracts the polar substance to move up the stationary phase. this is why we get separation.
