Equal parts of lemon juice, honey and whiskey. It soothes the cough and relaxes. I know you're going to think I'm an awful person for recommending whiskey, however, look at commercial products. Many, even for kids, contain alcohol.

Extra sleep. Not too much TV. And homemade soup with a huge amount of greens (organic spinach is best--don't worry it's perfectly safe boiled) boiled in it. The child doesn't have to eat the greens, just the broth. Put some nice noodles or rice and bits of white meat chicken in it, they'll eat it. The more minerals you can get out of vegetables, the more it will strengthen their immune system. That's for the cold. In fact, it works great for everyone.

A gentle nasal flush would be good, unless the kid goes ballistic on you.

I don't know about the cough but it sounds like you've got some other good suggestions. KEEP AN EYE ON THE TEMP AND CALL THE DOCTOR IF NEEDED. (sorry, I couldn't help adding that, kids get really sick so fast sometimes)

GENERAL COLD/NASAL SYMPTOMS
Try Zicam cold swabs for children. No bad taste
just swabs with gel for their nose. Very easy (maybe even fun for a 4-year old) and these work very well at speeding up the nasal and overall cold.
COUGH
For a cough, dark chocolate - that's right. Chocolate contains an amino acid called theobromine that stops coughs better than codeine. Milk chocolate isn't as good. Go for the less sweet, dark kind.
Best of luck

My grandmother used to give me a big glob of honey on a spoon. Helped with the cough anyway.
