Disneyland is for anytime. Magic Mountain is perfectly safe. Don't listen to people when they say otherwise. I was just there for 3 days, and it was great. They have a new coaster called Tatsu, and of course Magic Mountain still might be closing down soon even though I know that it can't close down next year because Six Flags is still saying that you can go there on your season pass.
Magic Mountain has 16 working roller coasters in which probably 2 aren't your type because they are kids coaster. They have the incredible X, and my favorite Deja Vu. Once you experience these both, you will understand why I mention this to you.
I would choose both Disneyland, and Magic Mountain. Disneyland is for everyone. It's not just for kids because California Screamin' line was not kiddie at all. The S&S, Indiana Jones ride, Tower of Terror, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Star Tours, and some other rides are not only for young kids. They are really fun.
If you go on the Matterhorn Bobsleds, I will tell you that the rougher side is the side not by the Alice and Wonderland ride, and the tea cups. This is the weak side. The other side is rougher. Yes, there are two sides. I would say forget Universal, and go to one of the other parks.

To be honest with you, Disneyland takes more than 1 day to get everything in. Universal Studios you can do pretty much everything in one day, maybe miss a show or two based on the times and such.
If your into movies and things like that, want to see how they are made and whatnot, then Universal Studios is the place to go. There is also Citywalk with stores to shop, eat, see movies, go bowling and other things to do once you get out of the Park itself.
If you want more of a Ride park, then Disneyland over Universal.
Sixx Flaggs is a better ride park (rollercoaster rides) than anything out on the West Coast. However, Sixx Flaggs can be a crappy place. It has since gone downhill from 10 years ago, the rides are awesome, but the guests tend to lean towards Wanna-be-Gang bangers, real gang bangers, and just plain *******.
Good luck, and more importantly, have fun wherever you go.

It depends....
Universal Studios is full of 4-d rides and such. Not much roller coasters or anything. When I went there, though, they had people from that show *can't remember* where you do scary things to earn money.
Disneyland, on the other hand, I'm not sure about. I've never been there but if it's like Disneyworld, it's filled with little kiddies, rides and maybe one or two 4-d rides.

I would choose Universal Studios...but thats just me. I've been to both places...and Disney is more for little kids...again, thats just me. But technically, Universal Studios was designed for older kids. So really, it depends on what kind of rides you like and how old you are.
